What bioluminescence is
It is plankton that makes light when the water is stirred. In still water you see nothing: it appears when you paddle, move your hand or a fish swims past. It depends on water temperature, tide, wind and moonlight.
Best months and moon phase
You can see it much of the year, but it is strongest in summer. The moon decides: under a full moon you barely see it. Look for nights near the new moon or go out after the moon sets.
| Factor | Best | Worst |
|---|---|---|
| Months | June to September (July is the peak) | December to February, cooler and with northerly winds |
| Moon | New moon or no moon in the sky | Full moon |
| Time | After 20:00, when it is fully dark | At sunset |
| Weather | Clear night and calm water | Strong wind or rain |
Where to see it in Holbox
Most often in the lagoon and in dark spots away from town, such as the Punta Cocos side, to the west. Tours go out by boat or kayak to spots that change from night to night. At night and without a guide it is easy to get lost or end up in the mangroves.
How to see it without harming it
- No repellent or sunscreen if you get in the water.
- No flashlights, no flash and no bright screens.
- Move the water gently and never take plankton away in bottles.
- Small groups so the lagoon is not crowded.
- Give your eyes about 15 minutes to adjust.
