Things to do in Holbox: an island guide

Holbox is where you slow down: shallow, calm beaches, sunsets at Punta Cocos, flamingos and birds at Punta Mosquito and the Yalahau lagoon, and whale shark (May to September) and bioluminescence tours. The island has no visitor cars; you get around on foot, by bike or in a golf-cart taxi. You arrive by ferry from Chiquilá in about 25 minutes.

Beaches and sunsets

The town beach has shallow, warm water, good for walking far out. To the west, Punta Cocos is the classic sunset spot; to the east, the Punta Mosquito sandbar gathers birds. Respect nesting areas and take your rubbish with you: there is no easy way to haul it off the island.

Nature: whale sharks, flamingos and bioluminescence

Holbox lies inside the Yum Balam flora and fauna protected area. Whale sharks arrive in summer; birds are around almost all year, and on dark nights the lagoon glows with bioluminescent plankton.

The town: murals, food and hammocks

Walk the centre to see the murals, eat fresh fish and the lobster pizza, and end the day in a hammock by the sea. Carry some cash: there are few ATMs.

Getting around the island

On foot or by bike around the centre, and by golf-cart taxi for longer trips or with luggage. In Holbox Go you get or book your taxi at the island tariff.
