Whale shark season dates
Whale sharks come every summer to feed on plankton off the north of the Yucatán peninsula. Swimming with them is regulated inside the Yum Balam flora and fauna protected area and the Caribe Mexicano biosphere reserve, and only licensed boats go out in the official season.

|---|---|
| May | Season opens mid to late month; sightings are irregular |

| July | Peak season; book 3 to 4 weeks ahead |
| August | Peak season; many boats around each shark |
| September | Fewer sightings; the season closes mid-month |
| October to April | No whale shark tours |

What the tour day is like
You leave early, around 6:30, from the Holbox pier. The ride depends on where the sharks are feeding that day: in 2026 some days took 2.5 to 3.5 hours at sea before the first swim. In the water, 2 swimmers go in with 1 guide per turn, for about 2 minutes each time.
- At most 2 swimmers and 1 guide per shark.
- Life vest on at all times.
- About 2 m from the body and 5 m from the tail; never touch it.
- No chemical sunscreen in the water: wear a rash guard or biodegradable sunscreen.
- Licensed boats only, in the official season.
Planning a trip in whale shark season
July and August are the island’s busiest months. A little slack makes the trip go better.
- Book your hotel and tour early: at the summer peak the island runs above 70 % occupancy.
- Keep a spare day in case the sea or weather keeps the boats in.
- June is a good balance: the sharks are there and there are fewer people.
- It is rainy and hurricane season: check the forecast before you travel.
- Summer nights are also bioluminescence season.
Prices and times are approximate and change with the season and weather. Check them before you travel.
