Holbox ferry schedule: Chiquilá – Holbox

9 Hermanos leaves on the hour and Holbox Express on the half hour. It does not matter which you take: they charge almost the same and you board whichever leaves first.

Some guides say the first Holbox Express from Chiquilá leaves at 7:30, and at Christmas and New Year departures may be reduced. Check with the company the day before.

These are the fares each company publishes and they can change without notice. If you see MXN 150 to 300 elsewhere, it is usually from earlier years.

Luggage and cars

9 Hermanos includes one suitcase per passenger; the crew stows large bags. The ferry carries passengers only: cars stay in Chiquilá, in lots next to the pier for approx. MXN 100 to 250 a day.

Northerlies, weather and port closures

From November to February, nortes (cold fronts with strong wind) arrive. With nortes or storms, the Port Captain can close the crossing and both companies stop together, sometimes for a few hours and sometimes all day. In choppy water the crossing can take up to 40 minutes.

The last ferry and early departures

The last ferry to Holbox leaves Chiquilá at about 21:30 (Holbox Express) and the last one back leaves Holbox at 20:30. The last boat waits only briefly for latecomers.

The first boat from Holbox leaves at 5:00 (9 Hermanos). With 2.5 to 3 hours on the road you reach Cancún airport around 8:30; if your flight leaves before 10:00, sleep in Chiquilá or Cancún the night before.
